I seriously doubt it. That info keeps many companies in business. For screws and such. thread pitch gauges, and you need a commercial/industrial set. And that might not even be enough. The firearms industry has always used oddball crap.
I just went through this with the drill and tap for the 416 front sight. The neighbor has been a machinist all his life, Told him the front screw was 6-48..Said we should get a carbide, he'd order one...."NOPE", says I..... " I can get one from MSG" says he...."knock yerself out" says I....30 minutes later, he proceeds to tell me the thread pitch I told him is wrong. Proved him wrong, and he hardly accepted it even then. Called later to see if I screwed up. Nope.
To this day, screws on firearms can be a bastard. Be careful with the head type on scope bases. They are changing head contours, and it can bite you in the ass. Had to search for hours to find a double square shouldered screw for the front sight I had. Open sights use REALLY oddball heads.

I agree that gun makers used weird thread sizes. On some of the older stuff, they would actually make the screw to fit. I just don't know why everything has to be so secretive.

Happy Thanksgiving all. I am thankful for the three branches of govt. this year. :) Also for most of the people around me.;)

I'll second the motion. Excepting, The people around me....There ain't none...THAT'LL WORK !!! ...Just me and the dawgs, I been eating chili, The Dawgs decided being outside was better fer awhile.....Smart Dawgs.....
It's cold out. Was looking for deer. Thought the windows was fogged ? Think I may have frosted the glass. Need to check n see iffn the back of me drawers is still there............................

I don't think that anyone who can smell ? Wants to be around me. This IS intentional. Like you, as I get older I have much less use for people. However, as I've got older ? For some reason I've gotten somewhat civil about not being around them. I don't insult or threaten to do damage to them anymore, for the most part..... I've learned to be hard to find.
I may head out and hunt a bit. Feel the need to see what the 284 will do.

I have become an indentured servant. When I cut my toe I got demoted from siding superintendent to field hand. I fixed a fence, hung Christmas lights, cleaned gutters, and put a screen over the drain vent on the roof at my daughters house. I was just supposed to fix the fence where the dog got out and it turned into an all day sucker. Oh Happy Thanksgiving y'all.

Here are some firearms and home defense myths that just won’t die.

What is more frustrating than myths that get passed around with such regularity when no one pauses long enough to examine whether or not they are true? Maybe a case of the shingles, but other than that…

Here are some firearms and home defense myths that just won’t die.

It won’t happen to you:

“Who cares?” you might think. “It’ll never happen to me.” You’re right, it probably won’t. However, there are one heck of a lot of burglaries every year. Since “home invasion” isn’t a named crime, statistics are difficult to obtain. A “home invasion” can be a burglary. It can be an assault, It can be an armed robbery. It can be rape or murder. You get the idea. Since there is no specific tracking for violent home invasions, we have to look at the associated crimes. Depending on the year and source, consider these figures.

There are between two and nearly four million burglaries every year in the United States.
In about a million of these cases, someone is home when the intruder breaks in.
Over a quarter million people become victims of a violent assault associated with a home break-in.
That’s a lot of action. That’s as many as 10,958 self-serve home-entries each and every day. Or, you might think of it as almost eight per minute.

Oh, one more interesting tidbit. While most people assume that nighttime carries the highest risk of a home invasion, most incidents occur between the daylight hours of 10am and 3pm. Food for thought for your overall home security plan. Lock those doors during the day too!

A laser will just give away your position:
I can’t count how many times I’ve heard this myth repeated. I think it persists because there is a nugget of largely irrelevant truth to it. There are a few things to consider before discounting the value of a laser sight on your home defense firearm.

First, are you planning to play a game of “Ninja find the other ninja” in your home as part of a defense plan? If your primary use of a firearm involves sneaking through dark villages and buildings so you can kick down a door and kidnap someone, then this myth is valid. A laser probably will give away your position. If your use case involves defending yourself and family from someone breaking into your home, you might want to reconsider your tactical plan if it involves you sneaking around playing cat and mouse with a band of tactical commandos who are going room to room looking for you. I’m sure there’s an example of a highly trained Delta Ninja Seal Omega Sector Assault Team planning a nighttime attack on one of our suburban homes, but the vast majority of cases are better resolved by hiding in place, armed and ready, while calling the police for backup.

As an industry acquaintance once said, “A laser won’t give away my position. What will give away my position is me yelling something to the effect of, ‘Get out of my house before I shoot your sorry @ss!’”

Second, laser beams are largely invisible. Unless your home is full of smoke or fog, all that’s visible is the light on the firearm itself and the dot on the target. With rare exception, the beam in between doesn’t show. Give it a try.

Third is the modern miracle of pressure switches. Lasergrips like the Crimson Trace models feature pressure-activated switches. Squeeze tighter and the laser is on. Loosen up and it’s off. There’s no hand-crank operation that fires it up continuously for an hour or so with no shutoff capability. If you need to move to a child’s room or discreetly escape, turn it off maybe?

Fourth, before you pull a trigger in your home in the middle of the night, you’d better be darn sure of what you’re shooting at. That means either there’s enough light so you can see your target (which means they can see you) or you’re using a light of some sort. A laser isn’t going to be the thing that reveals your presence.

I poke some fun at this myth, but it’s a serious topic. I don’t care if you choose a laser or not. What I care about is the ability to get shots on target as fast as possible in poor light conditions and from unconventional positions that tend to happen in a self-defense scenario. I’ve not found anything more effective than a laser at making that happen. Your mileage may vary

Racking a shotgun slide:

Is this one a myth or not? I’ve not yet found any volunteers to break into my house at night so I can rack an 870 to see if it freaks them out.

I suspect most people really, really wouldn’t want to hear this noise while trying to steal your Xbox, and there is the crux of the matter. Most “home entries” are not invasions but simple attempts to discreetly steal stuff. In two-thirds or more cases, the dude breaking in would much rather not encounter anyone, so I suspect we can agree that the dreaded racking noise would cause a sudden desire for Depends on undershorts.

For the rest of the cases, I suspect we can also agree that it would be a great outcome if that racking sound works.

Just some personal info......I went to the Doctor yesterday and had a rigorous regime of x-rays performed. Knees, hips, and back. Performance is putting it mildly. I will find out in a week or two what becomes of them. I will either win an Oscar or will only be able to work commercials.

If things run the way I've seen in the past ? It'll be ultra sounds, MRI's, Cat Scans, and any other shit they can come up with, Then tell you the same thing the X-Ray found a year later.
That's what they pulled on She's hip replacement. I was so pissed off I about whupped someone's ass. Got run all over the state for 6 month's only to find out the first old Doc was right. Did micro surgery first. Nope that didn't work.
Then the sneaky piss ant I was working for used going to the doc with her to fire me. He was trying to sell the business, and gave the guy who was supposed to buy it my job. (Ass kiss) But got screwed on that one.....Don't know how he figured a 20 year old could do my job ??? Hell, His candy ass couldn't do my job.....Fun Times.

Since I go to the VA hospital, insurance companies play NO role in the decision making process. Insurance companies have and are ruining the health care business. If my personal Doctor requests something for me.....it is given with no questions asked. We have one of the best VA hospitals in the country here in Salem, Va. regardless of what you hear in the news about the VA system. I actually don't mind (too much) going there. If I needed 4 hours of time with my Doctor...he gives it. Anyway, I will see what's next in this adventure.

Good deal. You may actually get something done in a reasonable amount of time. I know a bud of mine likes the care he gets from the VA here in Mo, And he HATES doctors.

The x-ray people called today. My knees and hip are eat up with arthritis and my lower lumbar back is in bad shape. Shocker...I never knew. (sar)
They want to put that shot of steroid in my back to help with the pain. That's those things that can only be done three times. After that..it starts degrading tissue. Then I don't know what can happen. I guess I become bed ridden in a nursing home. o_O Maybe I can get a room with Nina so I can still keep an eye on her. (double sarcasm) Time will tell and we will see.

Cutting wood yesterday, Picked a standing dead tree. Along the edge of the pasture. Black oak, red oak ? = shit tree anyways, the tops gone, have a trunk about 40 - 50 foot. about 20" at base. Noticed a hole in it. Squirrel/ woodpeckers, who knows.....it was a squirrel.
A smaller tree is some length in front of it, a about 3" branch sticking out on the fall path side.
Get all ready, go to drop the tree. Figured the branch sticking out will slide out of the way. here I go. Start dropping the tree, all is going just ducky. The fall starts, As it's falling, I don't know what made me look up ? I do, Just in time to see the trunk break just about in half, and fling the top half back to me. ( the 3" branch sticking out).....at the break, it's about 14" diameter, about 16 foot long. It comes down, I take a half step back when it lands. Takes my hat off, lands on the toes of my left foot. The ground has a shit load of leaves, and the outside of the tree is spongy, Hurt like a bitch, no damage, Except to my drawers. I sat and looked at my steel toe loggers before I went out, Nope too much trouble, I'm in a hurry.
Shut the saw off...Sat on the stump from the day before, and pondered WTF just happened. If I have to change my drawers, And wonder if I'm cursed or blessed.
The tree was about 6' off plumb when this happened. Normally the trunk would have slid down the branch. I KNOW it was squirrel den, The little bastard came running out after the tree hit the ground. Don't know if it hung on a fork on the branch ? but if flung the top half back at some speed.
Anyway, after smoking a cig, I fired up the saw, and finished blocking and splitting the lower half up. Loaded it in the tractor bucket, unloaded enough for the night, and ran and picked up rifles at the FFL's.
And as it turns out ? The wood isn't much account for firewood anyway.
This is the third time in thirty + years something like this has happened. The last one hit me. I'm still lamed up from it. No more dropping tree's when I'm by myself.

"I sat and looked at my steel toe loggers before I went out." Sounds vaguely familiar. We all are going to have to come to the realization we don't heal as fast as we use to and we damn sure don't react as fast any more. We are going to have to stop and say ---ehhhhh maybe I'l put on those boots, safety glasses, gloves etc. I did something yesterday I have never done. I went to look at a tree stand that Terry's son in law put up and told Terry I could use to pistol hunt out of. I looked and the thought went through my head----I can get up there and it's not all that high---then for once in my life I actually thought "you can't do that you dumb bastard, you'll fall out and kill yourself." I may still do it but at least the thought wasn't "ehhhh I can do that piece of cake."

Glad you are alright and don't have a tunnel in your forehead. Cutting wood is dangerous.

I'm glad you are ok. Three fellers came and helped me cut two trees next to my house. They were actually on the neighbors property and I finally got permission to cut them down. I had been asking for 7 years. Since I am half lame, they did most of the work. I did drag some brush. Sometimes it's good to be old. They loaded up the wood and my son will help me move the brush sometime to my burn pile. We had a rope and one of the youngins climbed the tree and tied it so we could pull it with a truck. I am glad its down now. It would have gotten so big, it would have covered the house. No one got hurt.

I'm gonna have to cut a tree tomorrow but it ain't much of a tree. It's about 8 inches at the base. It's a sweet gum so it's not good for anything and I'll have to cut it up and burn it. It seems that it is in Lindas way, and she wants it moved, so she can see to shoot a deer down by the hundred yd target from the back deck. I have been instructed to put corn and a peanut butter pole in a specific place after I move said tree from her line of fire.

I am glad Ga. beat Texas. I just didn't want Texas to win the first year they were in the Sec.

Well it’s been a couple years since you kept a tally on the chipmunks Paul. Has Linda killed the all and none left to occupy her
